In a nutshell
Open the voice studio at herway.karisuite.com/voice, tap Start live practice and allow the microphone. Read the phrase on the card in your everyday voice and watch the pitch trail. The feminine pitch guide marks 185–300 Hz. Live practice records nothing, and your voice is analysed on your own phone or computer.
Want to hear the difference? Use Record to make take A and take B, then Listen & compare. Takes are temporary unless you download them. Keep it comfy: this is a practice tool, not speech therapy.
Last checked: October 2026 against the live voice studio. The pitch guide is simplified from UCSF Transgender Care guidance.
THE SHORT VERSION
Three taps to your first trail
Tap Start live practice.
Tap Allow for the microphone.
Read the phrase out loud, comfortably.
BEFORE YOU START
What you need
Good news: not much at all.
01
A phone or computer with a microphone
The microphone built into your phone or laptop is fine. No special kit.
A web browser: Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android, or an up-to-date browser on a computer.
A quiet-ish spot where you feel relaxed. A glass of water is lovely too.
About five minutes. No account, no sign-up, no download.
Came from TikTok, Instagram or Facebook? Their built-in browsers often block the microphone. TikTok/Instagram: tap the ••• or share menu, then ‘Open in browser’. The studio spots these apps and shows a pink box with a Copy link button, so you can paste the link into Safari or Chrome instead.
Get comfortable, then tap Start live practice at the bottom of the screen.
Your browser asks to use the microphone. Tap Allow.
The dark panel changes from MIC OFF to LIVE with a timer. You’re on!
Read the phrase on the card out loud in your everyday voice. Tap Next phrase for another one, or pick Expression, Rhythm, Everyday or Free talk.
Tap Stop live practice when you’re done. Live practice pauses by itself after 2 minutes, so just tap start again to carry on.
No need to raise your voice. Speak at your normal, comfy volume.
02
Tapped “Don’t Allow”? Here’s the fix on iPhone (Safari)
Stay on the voice studio page and tap aA in the address bar.
Tap Website Settings.
Set Microphone to Allow (or Ask), then tap Done.
Reload the page and tap Start live practice again.
Still blocked? Open the Settings app, go to Safari (on newer iPhones it’s under Apps, then Safari), find Microphone under Settings for Websites, and make sure it isn’t set to Deny. These are Safari’s own menus, so names can shift a little between iOS versions.
03
…and on Android (Chrome)
On the voice studio page, tap the small icon to the left of the web address.
Tap Permissions (or Site settings), then Microphone, and choose Allow.
Reload the page and tap Start live practice again.
Still blocked? In Chrome tap ⋮, then Settings, Site settings, Microphone. If herway.karisuite.com is under Blocked, tap it and allow it. If Chrome itself can’t use the mic, open your phone’s Settings, then Apps, Chrome, Permissions, and allow Microphone. Menu names vary a little between phones.
READING THE SCREEN
What am I looking at?
The studio has a button with exactly this name, What am I looking at?, if you want a refresher while you practise.
01
Pitch right now
The big number shows how high or low your voice is at this moment, in hertz (Hz). It wobbles as you talk. That’s normal and nothing to chase.
02
The pitch trail
The line shows your pitch over the last 10 seconds, with “now” on the right. Pauses and consonants leave little gaps, so a dotty trail is totally fine. Under the trail, Typical is the middle of your recent pitch and Usual range is where most of it sat. Typical is the friendliest number to watch.
03
The guide bar
The Feminine pitch guide bar says “Aim here 185–300 Hz”. Its colours are: Lower below 155 Hz, Overlap from 155 to 185 Hz, Feminine from 185 to 300 Hz and Higher above 300 Hz. It’s a broad reference simplified from UCSF Transgender Care guidance, not a pass mark. Pitch is one part of a feminine voice, and lots of women speak outside the band.
04
Focus and Tips
Focus hides the trail and makes the phrase bigger, for when you just want to read. Tips opens 18 short exercises, sorted into Warm up, Tone & larynx, Pitch, Real life and Care & know-how.
05
Resonance mode
Tap Resonance at the top, then Start live practice.
Say an easy, comfortable “ah” and hold it gently. Your first steady “ah” becomes your start, shown as 0%.
The marker shows how one part of your tone (the F2 resonance) moves compared with your own start, as a percentage. The shaded Personal practice zone starts at +5% to +15%.
Change the zone under Target shift (0% to match your start, or +5%, +10%, +15%). Found a tone you like? Tap Use this tone as target. Want a fresh start? Tap Reset start.
Resonance is not a femininity score, and higher isn’t automatically better. Keep the same vowel and a similar, comfy note. The studio holds back a reading if the note is above about 350 Hz, so there’s no need to push up. What this measures & details explains more.
TRY THIS
A 5-minute first session
Small and gentle beats long and tiring. Here’s a sweet little routine for day one.
01
Warm up (1 minute)
Tap Tips, choose Warm up and try one, like Hum into a hello or A little lip trill. Easy and quiet is perfect.
02
Notice your everyday voice (1 minute)
On Live practice with Pitch selected, tap Start live practice and read three phrases as you normally speak. Just look at your Typical number. No changes yet.
03
Try one small change (1 minute)
Read the same phrases again with one small change, such as a slightly lighter or slightly higher voice. Watch where your trail sits, and stop if anything feels tight.
04
Record take A and take B (1 minute)
Tap Record. Record take A in your everyday voice, then take B with your small change, using the same phrase.
05
Listen, then rest (1 minute)
On Listen & compare, play take A, then take B. If you like, tap the pencil to note what felt like you. Then have some water and rest your voice.
HEAR YOUR PROGRESS
A/B recordings
Recording two short takes is the easiest way to hear a change, because your ears notice things the meter can’t.
01
Record take A
Tap the Record tab. Take A is selected.
3-second delay is on, so you get a 3, 2, 1 count-in. Switch it off if you’d rather start straight away.
Tap Record take A and read the phrase. Tap Stop when you finish. Recordings stop by themselves at 60 seconds.
02
Record take B
When take A finishes, the studio jumps to Listen & compare and picks take B next. Tap Set up take B and record the same phrase with one small change.
03
Listen and compare
On Listen & compare, tap Play take A, then Play take B. The studio works out each take’s typical pitch on your device so you can compare. Pitch and Resonance each keep their own A and B.
04
Keep it or let it go
Takes are temporary. They clear when you leave the page, switch to another tab or app, or tap Hide screen. The Record and Listen tabs show a little reminder: “Takes are temporary. Switching apps or closing this page clears them. Download any you want to keep.”
If you come back after switching apps, the studio lets you know your takes were cleared. If you try to close or reload the page with takes you haven’t downloaded, many browsers ask you to confirm first.
To keep one, tap Download take A (or B). It saves an audio file to your device.
Delete take removes a take straight away.
Or open an audio file (up to 25 MB) lets you load an earlier download to compare. It opens locally and nothing is uploaded.
MAKE IT FIT
Settings
Tap the sliders icon (Voice settings) in the top bar.
01
Mic sensitivity
Under microphone sensitivity, choose Standard, High · soft voices or Extra · very quiet input. High is the starting setting. Try Extra if your mic is quiet or you speak softly. The Mic input meter shows your level while live practice is on.
There’s also a quick Mic: High button beside the pitch trail. Each tap moves it along: High, Extra, Standard, the same three settings. Resonance mode has its own Standard, High and Extra buttons.
02
Other handy settings
Give me a 3-second count-in for recordings turns the countdown on or off.
Save written reflections on this browser keeps your notes after you close the tab (more under Privacy).
Practice prompts picks which kind of phrases you see.
Advanced: Analysis ceiling for resonance (5,000, 5,500 or 6,000 Hz). If you’re not sure, leave it, and keep it the same when you compare takes.
PRIVACY IN PLAIN WORDS
Where does my voice go?
Nowhere. Here’s the detail.
01
Your audio
Live practice listens and measures, but makes no recording.
All the measuring happens on your own phone or computer.
Takes from the Record tab stay on your device and are never uploaded. They are temporary unless you download them.
The studio never plays your microphone through your speakers.
02
Hide screen
The eye icon (Hide screen) swaps the studio for a plain “Notes” page and changes the tab title to “Notes”. It stops the microphone and clears temporary audio. Tap Return to studio to come back. It does not erase your browser history or saved notes.
03
Your written notes
The pencil icon (My reflections) opens “What felt like you?”. Tap Keep this reflection to note how a session felt. Notes stay in this tab only, unless you tick Save written reflections on this browser in settings. Browser storage is not encrypted, so think about who else uses your device. Download notes gives you your own copy.
04
Everything else
If something on the page breaks, an error report goes to our error tracker (Sentry, EU region). It never includes what you type or any audio.
Our hosting keeps normal visit logs, like any website.
The “Make Her Way Yours” email box at the bottom of the studio page is optional. Your email is used only for Her Way updates.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If something isn’t working
01
No pitch trail
Check the panel says LIVE, not MIC OFF. If it says MIC OFF, tap Start live practice.
Speak a whole phrase. Pauses and consonants leave gaps, and very short sounds don’t show.
Make sure Pitch is selected. Resonance shows a different meter and listens for “ah”.
02
“Microphone permission was blocked”
Your browser said no to the mic. Use the iPhone or Android steps in Start the microphone. If you opened the link inside TikTok, Instagram or another app, open it in Safari or Chrome instead. TikTok/Instagram: tap the ••• or share menu, then ‘Open in browser’, or tap Copy link in the pink box and paste it into your browser (more on in-app browsers). Can’t use the mic at all? You can still open an audio file under Listen & compare.
03
Too quiet or too loud
“Very quiet input”: set the mic button to Extra, or move a little closer.
“A little too loud” or “Input clipping”: give the mic a bit more space. There’s never a need to speak louder than feels easy.
Wearing Bluetooth headphones with a mic? Your phone may be using their mic. Try without them if readings look odd.
04
My takes disappeared
That’s on purpose, for privacy. Takes clear when you switch apps, change tab, leave the page or tap Hide screen, and the studio tells you when you come back. Nothing is uploaded or saved anywhere, so there’s no way to bring them back. Download any take you want to keep before you leave.
05
It stopped by itself
Live practice pauses after 2 minutes and recordings stop at 60 seconds. Just tap start again. Little breaks are good for your voice anyway.
LOOK AFTER YOUR VOICE
Safety first, always
01
Comfortable is the goal
Keep it easy. Pause if your voice hurts.
Stop if anything strains, aches, tickles or goes hoarse, and rest. In your reflection you can even choose “Strained, I stopped”. That counts as a good session.
Short, regular practice is kinder than long sessions. Sip water.
If hoarseness or discomfort doesn’t settle, talk to a GP.
02
A practice tool, not speech therapy
Her Way is an educational practice tool, not individual speech therapy. The meters can’t hear everything a trained ear can. For one-to-one help, look for a speech and language therapist with experience in gender-affirming voice work.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Questions people ask
Short answers to what people ask most about the voice studio. Last checked: October 2026.
Is the Her Way voice studio free, and do I need an account?
Yes, it is free, and there is no account. Open herway.karisuite.com/voice in Safari or Chrome, tap Start live practice and allow the microphone.
Does the Her Way voice app record or upload my voice?
Live practice records nothing: the microphone is analysed on your device. The Record tab makes temporary takes on your device so you can listen back. Takes are never uploaded, and they clear when you leave or hide the tab unless you download them.
What pitch should I aim for?
The guide bar marks 185–300 Hz as a feminine pitch guide, with 155–185 Hz as an overlap zone. It is a broad reference, not a pass mark. Pitch is only one part of a feminine voice, and comfort matters more than any number.
Why is my pitch trail not showing?
Check that you tapped Start live practice and that the panel says LIVE, not MIC OFF. Speak a full phrase, because pauses and consonants leave gaps. If your voice is soft, set the mic button to Extra or move a little closer.
How do I turn the microphone back on if I tapped Don’t Allow?
On iPhone Safari, tap aA in the address bar, then Website Settings, and set Microphone to Allow. On Android Chrome, tap the icon to the left of the address, then Permissions, and allow Microphone. Reload the page and tap Start live practice again.
Is the voice studio speech therapy?
No. Her Way is an educational practice tool, not individual speech therapy. Keep practice comfortable, stop if your voice strains or hurts, and see a speech and language therapist for one-to-one help.
Ready when you are
Go gently, have fun with it, and remember: your voice is yours.
